The only 8 words you need to motivate you to take action The only 8 words you need to motivate you to take action “Press on. Nothing in the world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful (people)with talent. Genius will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent.” ?- Ray KrocThe next time you find yourself sitting there gazing at your smartphone, somehow expecting the answers are magically going to come to you, remind yourself first - it never works that way. And second, think of this great line from the movie Boiler Room,“Motion Creates Emotion”I say this because the biggest thing that holds all of us back is: Indecision Complacency Sitting still and believe it or not, what may actually be worse… Tepid action. Lukewarm, half-hearted, uninspired, simply-not-gonna-get the job done … action. I’ve seen this manifest itself in my life, and I’ve seen so many very intelligent people’s career dreams crash and burn because they just weren’t persistent enough.
6 Women Entrepreneurs Share Their Best Advice 6 Women Entrepreneurs Share Their Best Advice “Ask. Listen. Ask more. And just when you think you are out of questions, keep asking and keep listening.” Someone gave me that advice 11 years ago when I was starting my company, Goodshop. His point was: With so many people ahead of me who have traveled the entrepreneurship road themselves, I didn’t have to reinvent the wheel. By simply asking questions, having an open mind, and being an engaged listener, I could cut my learning process short by at least half. I am still learning 11 years later, and I continue to get advice from other entrepreneurs- not just from those much further along than I, but also from entrepreneurs just embarking on their small business journey. I asked seven entrepreneurial women, all of whom I admire immensely, to share insights from their toolbox of startup wisdom. Here is what they had to say. Sheila Lirio Marcelo, Founder, Chairwoman, and CEO of Care.com Be intense with outcomes, but chill with people.
Job Search What Happened to Process and Organization Job Search: What Happened to Process and Organization? Like most job seekers, Michael did not have all his notes, documents, and research in one place…anywhere. Not in a binder, in a shoebox, or on a computer. He started to tell me about this company and that one and, “Gee, I thought I was going to get this one.” I asked him to show me what he had been submitting to each job application and he handed me his résumé. How about an example of a cover letter? How about a follow-up letter if you have the email address of a hiring manager? Michael admitted, sheepishly, that he sent applications off and just waited. He has no tracking mechanism but he is busy applying! Stop the insanity! Before you apply to another position, get organized; it’s going to take massive attention to detail, brilliant follow-up, and networking to secure your next career move. Whether you are searching for your next role within your company or you are looking outside, you need to “project manage” your job search effort.
What to Do If Youre Feeling Alone in Your Career - The Muse What to Do If Youre Feeling Alone in Your Career You probably think you’re the only one who influences your career path. Realistically, it was you who powered through those three rounds of interviews, you who signed on that big client, you who put in long hours to get that promotion- right? But the thing is, you’re not the only person in those situations I just described above. On the other side, the hiring manager had to hire you despite you being maybe a bit underqualified. The client had to take the risk of signing on with a new company. The manager had to put his or her faith in you that you were ready for more responsibility. In addition to all your hard work, someone else also took a chance on you- even if he or she didn’t explicitly contribute to your achievements. This is the major theme in a recent post by Bijan Sabet titled, “Who took a chance on you?” In it, he lists out and gives thanks to the people throughout his life who gave him a shot despite the odds.
